Guys.
Light of my life. Stars of my night.
CHILL.
The amount of rage and whining and elitism I’m seeing in the tags is NOT the kind of thing we should be doing right now.
Guys, I will reveal a secret to you: not liking things is not a crime.
And most importantly not liking an album or a…
THIS.
I love SGHN. It took me a while because I was so blinded by the amazing impossible perfection (for my tastes) that is The Day that by comparison the rest of the songs seemed kinda lame except Wildfire II, which is almost as fabulous. Now though, I really quite like it. Almost all of it. I’ve even warmed up to Cinderblox a little, though I doubt it will never be one of my favorites.
So far, Sonata has not put out any release that’s been a complete disappointment to me. Like Tony said in a recent interview, when your favorite band changes in the same direction as your musical tastes, it’s the best thing in the world. I may have screwed up the quote a little, but the sentiment is the same. I have my favorites of course, and what I really want to hear changes from day to day, mood to mood. I love that they HAVE songs for any mood I’m in.
My tastes have been evolving away from power metal. I still like it, but in the last few years people whose music I would have found too WEIRD not long ago have been steadily climbing my favorites, and the straight-up POWER stuff has been falling off my radar. And Sonata has kinda gone that direction as well. It’s different. It’s not the same crap being spewed out by the american mainstream music industry. A band that can get me rocking hard and then surprise the hell out of me and make me laugh my ass off, and be creeped out, all in the same song, is exactly what I want right now. Sonata delivers.
That said, I don’t at all expect everyone to share my opinion. SGHN is surprising. It’s weird and different and that’s always going to be offputting to some people. Doesn’t mean they’re bad fans or bad people or have bad taste. Never apologize for what you like or what you don’t like, it’s just preferences. People having different preferences makes the world more interesting. Just don’t get so stuck up that you think YOUR opinion is the only thing anyone should follow. And don’t insult people for not conforming to your taste, just because they did at some point in the past.
